Rolls and Rivalry (by Kristy Boyce)

The third book in a series that is loosely connected by the characters playing Dungeons and Dragons.  This was a cute and fast read but I do think is weaker than the other books in the series.

It's mostly about a marching band rivalry (color guard vs. percussion) and the D&D doesn't even start until kind of a long ways into the book. It feels like it has to be in there to be part of this series but it is pretty de-emphasized. I also didn't love the lead characters or get very invested in their romance. They were fine but kind of meh.

And finally, this heavily features my YA pet peeve, the pop culture time warp. For example, in this case,  somehow the only music the characters listen to are bands from the 90s. Like our female lead is into Lilith Fair singer-songwriters and our male lead likes Nirvana and Nine Inch Nails.  It screams "this was written by a millennial who couldn't be bothered to research current pop culture references" and it always takes me out of the story!

Anyway this is a cute series but I'd definitely recommend either of the other two over this one, especially as a fan of RPGs.
