Guards! Guards! (by Terry Pratchett)

This is the eighth book in the Discworld series, but the student who lent it to me suggested that if I wasn't going to read all forty million Discword books, I should read the Night Watch series and this is apparently the beginning of it. It's fun, funny, super clever, smart, entertaining stuff. For example, I love the bit at the end of the book where they have to make sure their odds are a million to one against succeeding at something, because that's the only hope: nobody ever succeeds at odds of 999,999 to one.

I'm kind of sad that I didn't ask my student for the next book before spring break, because now I have to wait a long time to read the next one in the series. I want to find out what happens to Carrot. I love Carrot.

That is because Carrot rules. But Vimes, Vimes is magnificent.

Oh my god, I am such a dork. But I love these books unreasonably, and I'm excited you're reading them, and I will mail you all the guards books. But I need them back because I love them.

Or I'll send you them, if Jen doesn't. Even transatlantically.

Carrot is sweet, isn't he, but Vimes is my man.

If you feel like venturing outside the Watch books, there are several stand-alone books for which you don't have to have read any of the others. Of these I'd particularly recommend "Mort", "Moving Pictures", "The Truth" and "The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents" (the last of which is a children's book, and short).

And the "Witches" series which starts with "Wyrd Sisters" is terrific...

Sorry. They're addictive, I warn you.

This is weird, I could have sworn that I left a comment here a few days ago! Anyway, what I was going to say was that trust me, you are going to want to read all of the books. And in fact, you will be thrilled that there are 18,000 of them that you get to read!
